Omunky Has A New Monkey Friend!

Interview With Subeco

Hey guys! I have another great interview for you, its been a little while since I did one and Tim from Subeco was nice enough to offer to do one with me. Have a read:
Hey! Thanks for doing an interview with me! Tell us a bit about Subeco. When did you start it?, and why? How much planning went into it before you actually launched?
No problem! Thank you! I dig what you are doing at Tee Spotter! Subeco all started back on 2009 when I went shopping at my local stores in Orange County, California. I wanted to start being more environmentally conscious so I went shopping for some new organic clothing. I had heard great things about organic cotton. So I went to six stores and found a total of five organic shirts all of which I had little to no interest in the designs on the shirt. The only one I had interest in was a plain organic V-neck that was $46! I was outraged and from that day on I knew that I had to build a brand that was built around sustainability and a price that anyone can afford.
I noticed that each shirt comes with a hang tag and some seeds for people to plant. Do you think the majority of people who buy from you actually go and plant them? I love that idea and I hope that people aren’t too lazy to go and do that. What type of seeds do you generally give out?
Yes, that is correct. I like to call it “planting a better tomorrow” for everyone. Plants do wonder things for Earth and everyone on it. I will be including different kinds of seeds in each hang tag for each collection. For the new Winter Collection 2010, I have included Cosmos seeds. Enough to fill a 24” inch round pot. So, for every 100 Twitter followers and Facebook fans you get, you donate to have trees planted? That’s awesome! How many trees have you donated with this method? I also read that with each product purchased you donate to plant ANOTHER tree. Exactly how many trees have you guys planted?!

While creeping around your website I saw that you donate your trees to the Atlantic Rain Forest in Brazil, is there a specific reason you chose this forest?
Well in the time you have read this article up to this point over 100 acres of rain forest are being destroyed. So I have decided to donate to a foundation that has land that can’t be touched by anyone. This nature preserve is home to thousands of species of birds and protected species. Many of these species live and feed off these trees that are being planted. For simply following us on Twitter or liking us on Facebook or making a purchase of a Subeco product can actually make a positive impact on the world. Do any of your other shirts do that?
Subeco’s new winter line released late December and includes a few new products that you didn’t previously carry. These include cardigans and a really awesome thermal shirt[which at first glance reminded me of Dexter, but that’s just an observation haha]. Do you plan to have these kinds of products in the future? What other neat stuff would you like to try out?
Well we are currently looking into a lot of unique and different items. It just takes more research then your average brand. Organic and recycled materials are a lot harder to find, so it takes being a bit more creative then the average brand.
Were you trying to send a specific message with the new line? Or does Subeco in general send one big message with its products(to stay green)?
The entire message I am attempting to send is that there is always a more sustainable choice in everything you do. And it starts in your closet!
Now that this line is out, what are your next plans? Anything awesome coming in the near future? It’s okay if you don’t want to share just yet.

Would you say that Subeco has met your expectations or exceeded them since you opened?
With any business there is a lot of work involved. With some things you think will grow fast and some not so much.
